Books were the internet of past centuries. And in many ways the design skills you learn laying out printed, bound book are more significant lessons to me than anything I’ve encountered using Figma. Grids, type sizes, beautifully ragged columns of body copy, the rhythm and pacing of artworks, a provocative cover image, the textural feeling and hand of the paper stock and how it bulks into signatures within the book itself — there’s an endless amount of craft to learn in the making of books. And while these projects don’t come along as frequently as they used to, I believe they are a lasting and compelling technology to understand and design for.
